Song: Ekla Chalo Re
Artist: Rabindranath Tagore
From: Gitabitan (1905)

View: {Chords} - {Strum & Analysis} - {Tabs} - {Plain Lyrics} - {Song & Videos}

Time Signature and Beat Pattern:
4/4, does not use off beats (starts from 1st beat) - (Time signatures explained)

Fundamental Chord Structure:
Basic chord progression: Asus4-Dsus2-Dsus4-D and D-C-G

Original scale: G major

Chords transposed a scale of C: Gsus4-Csus2-Csus4-C and G-F-C (8 semitone below this scale)- (Transposition explained)

Roman numeral form notation: Vsus4-Isus2-Isus4-I and V-IV-I (modal progression) - (Roman numeral notation explained)

Strum Pattern:
Option 1: Play single down strokes for the parts where the chords change fast (like a march rhythm) and stry and play a |(DD)(UU)(D_)(UU)| pattern over other parts

Option 2: Use |(DD)(UU)(D_)(UU)| pattern as much as possible through out.

Option 4: Play broken chords or arpeggios instead of the strums but stick to definitive single down strokes for the fast changing parts.

(Explanation - 4 beats per meter; the stroke that is marked with a (') is played and muted; the beats in brackets are divided into subunits of equal duration as noted). (More on how to read strum patterns)

Between the meter chord changes occur throughout the song and the rhythm needs to be maintained (prone to loss). While changing from strum to single down-strokes, keep the rhythm in mind and you should be able to play it.

Playings Tips and Song Notes:
The chords are simple but change very fast. This should provide beginners with both a chord changing as well as a strumming exercise. Try singing along or playing along with the track to best guess the strum and chord positions.

The song is of great importance to the Indian freedom struggle. It has inspired the likes of Mahatma Gandhi. Do keep that in mind and try to learn and perfect it to the best of your abilities.

A note on the lyrics: the lyrics based on the of the commonest renditions of the song and will not (as usual) be identical in presentation as compared to the version in Gitobitan.

As for interludes, play 4 bars of Dsus2, i.e. |Dsus2 - - -|x4

Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate level
